SAILING BARGE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2010
The aim of this Handbook is
to give you, in one package, all of the information you need to know to get to,
and to take part in, the Model Thames Sailing Barge Championship Races in the
year 2009 (any errors or omissions in the venues data will be remedied via the
AMBO
Newsletter as and when it is published) and to keep track of the points you may
accrue towards the Championship Final to be hosted by the Cygnets MBC
and held on September 27th at Mote Park, Maidstone, Kent.
.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Introduction
It is over twenty years
since the Championships were inaugurated by Members of the Scale Sail
Association / Broomfield SMSS / Herne Bay Herons and run by Tony Lench, then the
following eleven years by Richard Chesney and linked with the
Association of Model Barge Owners
– and in 2008 there was another change in the organisation of the events /
venues!
It will be arranged (it is hoped) that the Host Club or an AMBO Member attending runs the event and that a report and the results will be passed to the Newsletter Editor for publication in AMBO’s ‘Bitts & Bobs’ and in the commercial model press.
The venues have basically
remained in the same area (the South East of England) with a couple of venues
further afield. I know there are small enclaves of interest in the West (
Remember we are out to enjoy
a days sailing with a good finish position as a bonus, show model sailing barges
to the public, encourage model building and an interest in the full size
prototypes.

General Notes
At many of the venues the
Barge Races are only one part of a Scale Sailing Regatta with other Open Class
Races or free sailing forming part of the days programme. Fees
may be payable to the Host Club and
there will be a Barge Race fee of 50p to cover the costs incurred in providing
trophies etc at the Final.
Hopefully time on the water
will be possible prior to the first race to allow the boats and wind conditions
to be checked out and the course will be at the discretion of the Host Club, the
lake/pond shape and the Race Co-ordinator / OOD but should ideally have at least four
turning marks plus the start/finish line.
It is hoped that at least
two races for each class can be run at each of the venues shown above. If
necessary - due to time, numbers or weather - all or any of the classes will
race together. The start may be combined or class start times staggered.
Given sufficient Lady
Skippers, specific Lady’s only races will be run during the day.
------------------------------------------
Points System:-
The points awarded for each
race will be the same for all racing classes:-
The race result position
relates to the points awarded ie.
1st
place
1 point
3rd
place
3 points
6th
place
6 points
Qualifying for the Championship Final:-
To qualify for the final, a Barge / Skipper combination must attend a minimum of 3 venues and the two best race scores from each of these three venues will be carried forward to the finals and added to the races scores at that venue to decide the Championships.
A Barge / Skipper
combination scores the points –
change Barges and you start a new set of qualifying scores.
Barges not qualifying
for the Championship Finals for their relevant Classes will be invited to the
event to take part in the Bowsprit, Staysail, Coastal and HFM Barge Matches for
other trophies at the finals venue.
---------------------------
In 2009 the original points based qualification requirements resulted in a total of 27 Skipper finalists with 31 boats in the five classes raced (8 Bowsprit, 11 Staysail, 8 30”, 2 Coastal and 2 Ladies). There were actually 52 skippers taking part at the various venues with some taking part in more than one class – making 78 ‘competitors’.
39 barge / skipper combinations took part at only 1 or 2 venues and therefore did not count in the finals reckoning BUT it is good to see the increasing interest in building model Sailing Barges in various parts of the country.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Trophys
Fijipsy Jack Current holder –John Jeffery (Bowsprit Trophy) sb GREYHOUND
The trophy is presented to the winner of the Bowsprit Championships and
is a replica of a Teal (a type of Duck) made of Kauri - a wood found in New
Zealand - presented by Mark Steele, a modeller from down under and Editor of
'WINDLING WORLD' the Newsletter of things wind powered in the Southern
Hemisphere (although he reports on events world wide).
Staysail Shield Current holder – Peter Mortimer sb ARDWINA
This Shield is presented (appropriately enough) to the winner in the
Championship Staysail Class.
30” (Little'uns) Trophy Current holder – Peter Mortimer sb JAMES PIPER
This is an elegant slim Cup type trophy presented to the Championship HFM
(or similar size) barge. It has not been truly competed for since 2000 due to
the lack of competitors during the years’ events and the finals.
Presented to the current holder for at least attempting to race and encouraging
competition.
TW Coastal Barge Shield Not awarded in 2010
A shield trophy for the winner of the Coastal Barge class. Presented to the
Championships by Tony Williams.
Lady’s Championship Trophy Current Holder – Jo Chesney sb JO PIPER
A Glass Bowl trophy presented by Alan Millman.
John Nicholls Concours 2008 winner – JAMES PIPER Denis Freeman
A new trophy (A Half Model
of a Barge Hull) in memory of
John Nicholls presented to the owner of the model – voted for by those attending
the finals – as the best presented model at the event.
